Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

Calculate the number of calories your body actually needs with BMR…

If you understand the amount of calories your body needs to function then you can determine how many calories are needed to maintain your current weight and then how many to lose weight. There is a right number of calories for you to eat each day. This number depends on your age, activity level, and whether you're trying to lose, maintain or even gain weight.

What it is…

Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the amount of energy your body needs to function. We use about 60% of the calories we consume each day for basic bodily functions such as breathing. Your BMR will tell you how many calories you should consume in order to maintain your weight. Factors that influence your BMR are height, weight, age and sex.

Why you need it…

How many calories you want to eat to lose weight is relative. Technically, there is no magic number of calories we should all eat each day to lose weight. While there is no "magic" number, there is a right number of calories for you to eat each day. This number depends on your age, activity level, and whether you're trying to loose, maintain or even gain weight. While most people can lose weight eating around 1,500 calories, it is important to assess your own daily calorie intake to meet your weight loss goals. Your BMR will give you an idea of the number of calories you should intake daily based on your determined activity level.

How to Calculate Your BMR…

Calculate your BMR using one of the following options:

  • BMR Online calculator - this calculator from FitWatch will tell you your BMR as if you were sedentary (no exercise at all). You will be asked to enter your height, weight and age.
  • Manual BMR Calculation - You can also calculate your BMR with a little math using a simple formula called the Harris-Benedict principle.

What do you do with this number…

The result of this formula will be the number of calories you can eat every day to maintain your current weight. Therefore, if you want to lose weight you will need to eat less than this number or you could increase your activity to the next level.

Once you know the amount of calories you should be eating you can decide how to eat. You could use up the entire amount on a few high-calorie items, but chances are you won't get the full range of vitamins and nutrients your body needs to be healthy. You may be surprised to learn that you can make healthy food choices without giving up the things you love about food. Many of the foods you grew up with, and the foods you love most, can be prepared in a healthy way. Every person is different and as a result weight loss methods will vary for each. The one constant is that learning to eat in a healthy way and understand what your body needs is something everyone should do.
